Hi, I’m Maurie! I am freshly learning all new ways to be a cat! I’m an introvert cat who trusts slowly and would rather have a few close friends than be the life of the party. However, my friends are friends for life! I like being petted by people I know well. I’ve also been really close friends with cats before, and I might make a great brother to other cats. I love looking out windows and watching the world go by. I often sleep with my back foot under my head as a pillow. I’ve been through many different chapters in my 12 years. I spent years as an outside cat, and very likely was born outside. At that time, I didn’t feel safe with humans being close to me. I was adopted by a kind woman and made close friends with her other cat, Sunkiss. The third cat, Crimsy, in our family was okay, but not my bestie. My owner respected my boundaries, and she guessed (rightly at the time) from my fearfulness and aloofness that I didn’t want to be touched. Unfortunately, first my bestfriend Sunkiss crossed the rainbow bridge, and then my loving owner did too. Now I’m here with OSCatR looking for my forever home. I have just learned very recently in my new foster home that I really do like touch after all! I really enjoy calm moments with a trusted person petting me. I will purr and knead my biscuits! Having relationships with new humans, and having humans touch me is a brand new thing for me. I still flinch sometimes and sudden movements startle me, but I’m very gentle. Sometimes I hiss or growl with new people, if I’m nervous, but I don’t lash out or swat, and I have no teeth, and have never tried to bite anyone. I’m never aggressive. I’m a sweet, timid soul who wants to connect.
About Me:
Not everyone is ready for a 20 year commitment, but if you have a shorter timeframe in mind, Maurie could be the sweet, calm and independent senior cat for you. Maurie is learning a whole new way of interacting with humans fairly late in life. He will need to practise his new skills in a calm home so that he doesn’t withdraw. He needs a human who’s willing to be patient and continue to coach him. He’s ready to show you that it’s never too late in life to turn over a new leaf. Maurie will need to start out in a smaller "safe" room where you can spend lots of time with him within arms reach, rather than having full home access right away. He might be there for several weeks as he gets to know and trust you. Maurie is a cat in transition, which means his relationship with you will blossom over time. An ideal match for Maurie is someone who is patient and willing to build their bond with him in a smaller space for several weeks before letting him have whole-house access. If he’s given whole-house access too soon, it may be that he reverts to be an “untouchable” cat again. You might be the right match if you love seeing things from a cat’s perspective, and understand that he’s still in the training phase of learning to be a “regular” house cat. Our deep hope is that Maurie will continue to connect with humans, giving and receiving love and affection. Maurie is very easy going, but the one thing he fears and resists above all is being picked up. Most of his fear of being within arms reach seems to be that someone will pick him up. So, if you want to pick up your cat a lot, then Maurie is not for you. He may learn over time to be comfortable with it as your relationship unfolds, but avoid it unnecessarily if you want to be good friends. Maurie has no teeth, the remaining ones needed to be extracted by our Veterinary partner in March due to stomatitis, and now he eats primarily wet food, but he loves kibble too, and can have a mix of both. Maurie has flawless litterbox skills, and is not a fussy eater. Rarely, he does get classic cat zoomies, but he’s generally very calm and chill.
Notes:
The adoption fee includes a health check, first vaccination in a series and any that become due while in care, first anti-parasite treatments needed in care, spay or neuter and microchip at our Veterinary partner. There is a 10% discount when you adopt 2 cats/kittens. The adopter will be responsible for any vaccine or boosters, anti-parasite treatments that are needed after adoption. Kittens usually need 3 vaccines, one month apart starting at age 7 weeks. Juveniles and Adult cats usually require 2 vaccines one month apart in the first year, then annual vaccines. Deworming is recommended at the time of each vaccine appointment. If you are intending to adopt, please be aware that your Veterinary clinic may be experiencing backlogs in scheduling appointments, so do not delay calling your clinic to book your new cat's needed booster appointment(s). Please note that cats are not tested for FIV/FeLV nor can FIP be predicted. We will share any medical information gathered during our health checks and observations revealed during their time in care. But it is important to know that some illnesses can have an incubation period of 10 days, which means that a cat can leave in good health but get sick a few days post adoption. In addition, the stress of a new environment can affect a cats’ immune system.
APPLICATION NOTE: The application for this cat/kitten may close quickly depending on the number of applications received. As our goal is to find the best match based on the cat(s) needs, only those chosen for a meet-and-greet will be contacted via email. If you are interested in meeting one of our fosters, please visit our website www.helpcats.ca and complete the Adoption Interest form: Once your completed application is received and reviewed, our Adoption Coordinator will be in contact within 24-48hrs. If you have not heard from us in this time period please check your SPAM folder. Sometimes our emails end up there.
